Dr. Jastifer is a West Michigan native who grew up in Lowell. When not at work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their three sons.
Dr. James R. Jastifer M.D. is a fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle reconstruction. He is also a member of the clinical faculty at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He strives to provide advanced and compassionate care to his patients while contributing to the educational training of the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
In addition to foot and ankle reconstruction, Dr. Jastifer specializes in treating common foot and ankle conditions, such as arthritis, flatfeet, tendon disorders, bunions, and hammertoes. He also takes emergency calls and has extensive experience in orthopaedic trauma. Dr. Jastifer has published numerous peer reviewed articles and textbook chapters in the orthopaedic field. He actively teaches and collaborates with researchers from the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Western Michigan University. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
Dr. Jastifer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, graduating summa cum laude. He then attended Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where he completed his medical degree. After medical school, he spent five years completing his surgical internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the Western Michigan University School of Medicine. Dr. Jastifer then completed a one-year foot and ankle surgical fellowship under the renowned Dr. Michael Coughlin at the Saint Alphonsus Foot and Ankle Clinic in Boise, Idaho. His fellowship experience also included working alongside Dr. Coughlin’s partners, Chris Hirose M.D. and Travis Kemp M.D.
Dr. Jastifer currently practices at OSMC in Elkhart, IN.
